Proverbs Chapter 23

X. Defeat of the Drunkard - Proverbs 23:29-35 

Deuteronomy 29:6 - Ye have not eaten bread, neither have ye drunk wine or strong drink: that ye might know that I am the LORD your God.

Proverbs 31:4 -  It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: 5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted. 6 Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts. 7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more. 8 Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.

Jeremiah 35:6 - But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever:

Luke 1:15 - For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

Ephesians 5:18 - And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

I Peter 4:1- Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; 2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. 3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:

A. Who hath Woe - 29 Who hath Woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

Isaiah 5:11 - Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them! ....22 Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:

Isaiah 28:1 - Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!

B. What is it, Wine - 30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

Proverbs 20:1 - Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

C. When is it Wrong - 31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

Isaiah 28:7 - But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way;...

Romans 13:13 -  Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. 14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

D. Why you Wonder - 32-35 

1. Alcohol makes you Sorry - 32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

Habakkuk 2:15 - Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness!

2. Alcohol makes you See - 33 Thine eyes shall behold strange women,

3. Alcohol makes you Say - and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

4. Alcohol makes you Sick - 34 Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

5. Alcohol makes you Senseless - 35 They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not:

Luke 21:34 - And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.

6. Alcohol makes you Seek - when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
