"Recovering All" I Samuel 30:1-2
I. The Loss Was Personal -
A) Unexpected - 1 And it came to pass, when David and his
men were come to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the
south, and Ziklag, and smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire;
B) Unbelievable - 2 And had taken the women captives, that
were therein: they slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away,
and went on their way.
Galatians 2:4
- And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to
spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into
bondage:
Galatians 5:1
- Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be
not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
C) Until - 3 So David and his men came to the city, and,
behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their
daughters, were taken captives. 4 Then David and the people that were with him
lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep.
Job 1:20 -
Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the
ground, and worshipped, 21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and
naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away;
blessed be the name of the LORD. 22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God
foolishly.
D) Uprising - 5 And David's two wives were taken captives,
Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. 6 And
David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the
soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his
daughters:
Psalms 109:21-
But do thou for me, O GOD the Lord, for thy name's sake: because thy mercy is
good, deliver thou me. 22 For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded
within me. 23 I am gone like the shadow when it declineth: I am tossed up and
down as the locust. 24 My knees are weak through fasting; and my flesh faileth
of fatness. 25 I became also a reproach unto them: when they looked upon me they
shaked their heads. 26 Help me, O LORD my God: O save me according to thy mercy:
27 That they may know that this is thy hand; that thou, LORD, hast done it. 28
Let them curse, but bless thou: when they arise, let them be ashamed; but let
thy servant rejoice.
II. The Lord and Prayer -
A) Encouraged - 6b but David encouraged himself in the LORD
his God.
Job 12:13 -
With him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding.
Psalms 18:29
- For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a
wall.
Psalms 19:14
- Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in
thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.
Psalms 56:3-4
-
B) Ephod - 7 And David said to Abiathar the priest,
Ahimelech's son, I pray thee, bring me hither the ephod. And Abiathar brought
thither the ephod to David.
C) Expectation - 8 And David inquired at the LORD, saying,
Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them?
Psalms 62:5
- My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.
Philippians 1:20
- According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be
ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be
magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.
D) Engage - 8b And he answered him, Pursue:
III. They were Lead by a Promise -
A) Wielded their Faith - 8b for thou shalt surely overtake
them,
B) Without Fail - 8c and without fail recover all.
Isaiah 25:8
- He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears
from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all
the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it. 9 And it shall be said in that day, Lo,
this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD;
we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.
C) Went Forward - 9 So David went, he and the six hundred
men that were with him, and came to the brook Besor, where those that were left
behind stayed. 10 But David pursued, he and four hundred men:
Psalms 27:14
- Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart:
wait, I say, on the LORD.
D) Weary and Faint - for two hundred abode behind, which
were so faint that they could not go over the brook Besor.
Matthew 8:22
- But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.
Luke 9:60 -
Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the
kingdom of God.
